Materials

50 mm linking pins (10x); a 20 mm linking pin

A 0.25 mm nylon line; a thin needle; scissors; snipping pliers; round/cylinder-nosed pliers; possibly needle-nosed pliers that are a combination of the previous pliers; flat-nosed pliers; a file handle

Procedure

Step 1

Straighten a 50mm eye pin using pliers, if it is bent. String it with 6x R10, 3x R8, 3x R6, 3x R8 and 6x R10. About 7-8 mm of wire should protrude from the pin.

Step 2

Twist the protruding wire on the eye pin into an eye. The eye should be approximately the same size as the eye at the other end. Leave a small gap between the newly created eye and the outer R10. This will disappear once the eye pin has been twisted. The eye should have been twisted in the same plane as the eye at the other end. Grasp the edge of the wire between the points of the round-nosed pliers. Twist the wire around the point. Close the eye. Twist the wire under the eye in such a way so that its centre is above the hole of the R.

Step 3

Twist the eye pin with the strung R. Initially shape it by hand so that all the pins are bent in the same way. Press the bent eye against the file handle for the final shaping. At the end, modify the rotation of the eyes using the flat-nosed pliers so that they are in the same vertical plain.

Step 4

Create 10 twisted "ribs" from the eye pins.

Prepare about 70 cm of the line threaded into the eye of a sewing needle. String the created eyes on the "ribs" with 1x R10 between each of them (10 eyes – 10x R10). Ensure that the "ribs" are twisted in the same direction. Thread the line through the eyes and the R10 one more time. Tighten. Tie off the line with two knots. Pull the ends back into about 4x R10 and the eyes. Cut them off. The threading is quite stiff, so be careful not to disrupt the arch of the "ribs". If necessary, adjust the bend of the "ribs".

Step 6

Spread the individual "ribs" with the free eyes upwards. Thread the line through the created eyes with 1x R10 between them. Pass the thread through the eyes and the R10 one more time. Tighten. Tie two knots. Pull the ends of the line back into the R10 and the eyes. Cut them off. If necessary, adjust the "ribs".

Step 7

String 1x R6 onto an eye pin. Pass the eye pin through the top eye made of R10 from inside the lantern. Press the pin up with your fingers between the "ribs". String another 1x R6 onto the pin. Shorten the protruding wire to about 10 mm. Twist and eye, this time about one third of the way up the round-nose pliers' jaws.
