Procedure

Step 1

Each component measures 2 cm diameter, the finished necklace measures 40 cm.

To make the first component

Thread your needle with 55 cm of thread and pick up 1x R13 and 1x C 6 times. Tip – lay the C beads in a line on your work surface and pick them up by passing your needle through the same hole of all C beads (either top or bottom). Figure 1a. Leaving a 15 cm tail, retrace the thread path and end by passing through the first R13 and C a further time. Figure 1b.

Step 2

Working in the opposite direction, pass your needle through the empty hole of the first C. Figure 2a. Pick up 5x R11 and pass through the empty hole of the next C. Repeat until you have added 5x R11 between the empty holes of each C. Figure 2b.

Step 3

Retrace the thread path, except the middle bead of each group of 5x R11. Pull your thread firmly as you work so that the middle beads added in the previous step pop up to form a point. Figure 3a and 3b.

Step 4

Pass your needle through the first 3x R11 to exit a middle point bead. Figure 4.

Step 5

To make the necklace

Following steps 1 to 4 above, make 17 components. For two of the components use a longer 70 cm thread leaving a 15 cm tail.

Step 6

Leaving the 2 components with longer threads for later use, lay 2 of the other components side by side. Using the working thread of the one on the left, pick up 3x R13. Pass your needle through the corresponding middle point bead on the other component. Pick up 3x R13 and pass your needle through the first middle point bead again. Figure 6.

Step 7

Retrace the thread path except the middle bead of each group of 3x R13. Pull your thread firmly as you work so that the middle bead of each group of 3 pops up to form a point. Figure 7a and 7b.

7 / a

Step 8

Following the steps above, attach 15 components into a straight line. Tie off and trim the working threads and tails as each section is completed.

Step 9

Following the method shown in Figures 6 and 7, attach one of the remaining components to one end of the necklace. Using the working thread, travel to the middle point bead shown in Figure 9. Pick up 22x R11 and pass your needle through the corresponding point bead shown, back through the new R11 and through the first point bead again.

Step 10

Following Figure 10a, pass through the new R11 and the connecting point bead again. Pick up 3x R13, pass through the R11 loop, pick up 3x R13 and pass through the connecting point bead and the R11 loop a further time. See Figure 10b. Tie off and trim both the working thread and tail thread.

Step 11

Using the remaining component, repeat steps 9 and 10 at the other end of your necklace Figure 11.
