The Cementum company is giving glass byproducts from Preciosa Ornela a new purpose.
The founder of Cementum, Ing. Jan Čermák Ph.D., has devoted more than ten years to the research and development of sustainable building materials, especially concrete.
His speciality involves replacing natural raw materials with recycled materials, including construction and demolition rubble or glass byproducts.
He has acquired experience while realising pilot projects in the Czech Republic and abroad, including extensive infrastructure jobs in the Near East. He says of himself that he admittedly is the managing director, but at the same time, he is also a technologist, a worker, a warehouseman and a trader…, he does whatever is necessary in the company.
He graduated from a master’s course focussed on construction materials and a specialised course on the technical expertise required for workers at expert institutions and he gained his PhD from the Technical University in Brno. He is not only a scientist, but also a creator. He has always been interested in the tangible results of his work and as such he has devoted himself to creative work with unconventional materials, such as concrete.
Cementum focuses on developing high-strength concrete with the maximum use of various raw materials. He is examining the use of glass byproducts as an aesthetic and technically valuable replacement for natural fillers in cooperation with Preciosa: not only from the point of view of their structure and strength, but also their sustainability.
A wide range of design products is produced there under his leadership, ranging from home accessories and gift items to urban furniture. These products are not only visually attractive, but also functional, resistant and long-lasting.
He has become a pioneer in the area of 3D concrete printing. He was the first in Europe to propose and successfully test a concrete mix for 3D printing with the natural aggregate fully replaced with recycled aggregate. He is the co-author of three utility models and a patent and has published a series of expert articles in the area of construction materials, including publications concerning sustainable and effective construction concrete made using 100% recycled aggregate. Thanks to his vision and work, Cementum has become a leader in the area of the circular economy in construction that transforms waste into valuable and aesthetic products.
