sieve brooch finding (26 mm) with 20 holes; 0.20 mm nylon line; a thin needle;
scissors; flat nose pliers

The procedure:

Use the netting stitch.

Each pin has a diameter of approximately 4 cm.

Step 1:

Thread your needle with 1.9 m of thread and pick up 10x R10 and Rip. Leaving a 40 cm tail, pass your needle through the first bead again to form a circle and then pass your needle through all 20 beads again finishing with your needle exiting the first seed bead. See Figure 1.

Note - to create a uniform look, ensure that each Rip has the coloured side facing the same way as you pick them up.

1

Step 2:

Begin to attach the beadwork to the top of the sieve finding by placing the circle of beads on top of the domed side of the sieve and holding it firmly in place. Pick up 4x R10 and pass your needle down through a hole on the outside edge of the sieve and up the hole directly to the left of it. Pass your needle back through the new 4x R10 spine and through the first R10 added in step 1, the first Rip and the second R10 as shown in Figure 2.

Note - the sieve finding is shown larger than real life for illustration purposes.

2

To add the second spine, pick up 4x R10 and pass your needle down the hole in the sieve shown in Figure 3. Then pass your needle up the hole to the left, back through the 4x new R10, through the R10 at the top and the next Rip and R10 in order to get into position to add the next spine.

3

Repeat this movement adding a vertical spine of 4x R10 between each Rip (a total of 10 spines). Complete the row by passing your needle down the first 4x R10 added in this row and the hole in the sieve to the left of the first spine. See Photo A to check your work at the end of this step.

Step 3:

Using the tail thread, pass your needle down the first 4x R10 added in the previous row, out through the hole in the sieve to the left of the first spine and up through the central hole in the sieve so that your needle exits the centre of the ring of beads created in step 1. Pick up 4x R10, a fire polished bead and another seed bead and pass your needle back through the FPB and the first 4x R10 and back through the central hole in the sieve. Pick up another R10 (the new bead will lay on the underside of the sieve finding) and pass your needle back through the central sieve hole – see Figure 4. Retrace this thread path several times to securely attach the new beads to the centre of the sieve. Tie off and trim the tail thread only.

4

Step 4:

Using the working thread, pass your needle up through the hole in the sieve to the right of the first spine created in step 2. Pick up 3 R10 and pass your needle down the next hole and up the next hole. Continue working in this manner around the sieve until you have added 3 beads between each pair of holes (a total of 30 beads) which should lie around the base of each Rip (not between the Ripples). Complete the row by stepping up through the first 3 beads added in this row. See Figure 5.

5

Step 5:

Add 1x R10 between each set of 3 beads added in the previous step (a total of 10 beads). Complete the row by stepping up through the first bead of this row. See Figure 6.

6

Step 6:

Add 4x R10 between each bead added in the previous step (a total of 40 beads) and complete the row by stepping up through the first 2 beads only. See Figure 7.

7

Step 7:

Following the same thread path as the previous step, add 1x R10 between the second and third beads in each 4 bead set added in the previous row (a total of 10 beads). Retrace the thread path a second time (without adding any beads). Complete the row by exiting the middle bead of a 3 bead set added in step 4 with your thread coming out underneath the 5 bead net, between the beads and the sieve finding. See Figure 8.

8

Step 8:

Turn your work over and attach the back of the sieve finding to the perforated front section by carefully folding over the metal tabs with the pliers. See Photo B.

Step 9:

Add 5x R10 between each middle bead of the 3 bead sets added in step 4 (a total of 50 beads).

Note - the new 5 bead sets should lie below the netted sections created in steps 6 and 7 not above. Complete the row by stepping up through the first 3 beads of this row. See Figure 9.

9

Step 10:

Add 6x R10 between each middle bead of the 5 bead sets added in the previous step (a total of 60 beads) and complete the row by stepping up through the first 3 beads of this row. See Figure 10.

10

Step 11:

Following the same thread path as the previous step, add 1x R10 between the third and fourth beads in each 6 bead set added in the previous row (a total of 10 beads). Retrace the thread path a second time (without adding any beads) pulling your thread tightly as you work. See Figure 11. Tie off and trim the thread.
